Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. While ADD is an older term typically referring to inattentive symptoms without hyperactivity, ADHD is the current clinical term used to encompass all variations of this condition.

ADHD is classified into three main types based on symptoms:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Difficulty focusing, frequent daydreaming, being easily distracted, trouble organizing tasks, and often losing things. This form of ADHD may have previously been referred to as "ADD."

  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Excessive fidgeting, restlessness, difficulty sitting still, talking excessively, acting without thinking, and interrupting others. Hyperactivity is more noticeable in this presentation.

  3. Combined Presentation: A combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

ADHD affects both children and adults, though symptoms may appear differently across age groups. In children, ADHD can manifest as difficulties in school, while in adults, it might affect work performance, relationships, and daily responsibilities. Treatment options often include behavioral therapy, medication, lifestyle modifications, and coping strategies to manage symptoms and improve daily functioning.
